How to Use a Distance Calculator
Distance is a scalar quantity that measures the space between two points or objects, and can be calculated by subtracting their x coordinates from their y coordinates and then dividing by the Pythagorean Theorem.
Our distance calculator takes into account the curvature of Earth for accurate calculations, giving a much more precise result than if using GPS alone. Simply enter in both cities/zip codes/addresses into their respective Distance From and Distance To fields before clicking Calculate.
Latitude 1
Latitude 1, or latitude 1 as it’s more commonly referred to, is one of the coordinates that help establish a location on a map or globe. It measures the distance north or south from a line running parallel with the equator; this line divides our planet into two equal halves and its value increases as you travel north/south while decreasing as you head east/west.
Each point on Earth has a set of latitude and longitude coordinates known as geographic co-ordinates, which can be used to locate any place on the globe and also measure distances between any two points.
Finding latitude can be done either by looking at a map, entering city names/addresses into search engines, and viewing their results. Search results should provide coordinates that can be entered into distance calculators to calculate air distance between locations – which will display in miles and kilometers on maps known as great circles or orthodromes.
Latitude alone does not dictate distance; time zone differences and speed also play a factor. To calculate distance, one equation that works well is d = savg x t; this formula calculates both distance between two points as well as average speed traveled between them using speed values for speed calculations (savg), time values for traveling times between points (t). You can also use this equation to estimate travel times using values like savg and time (t and savg respectively).
As another method for measuring distance, one could divide the equator into degrees of latitude and longitude. For instance, while the equator lies on latitude 0, poles have latitude 90. Each degree of latitude can be divided into 60 minutes with one minute covering approximately 1.8 kilometers (1 mile).
There are various apps for smartphones and tablets that can assist in the calculation of distance. Apple Maps’ distance calculator, for instance, uses GPS data to pinpoint each destination before showing you on a map as far away from you as the crow flies distance is displayed – you can even share your route and calculations with others!
Latitude 2
Distance Calculator is an online tool that lets you measure the distance between two points on a 2D plane. It features an intuitive user interface with a map displaying travel directions with arrows indicating distance in both miles and kilometers; additionally it also shows the shortest air distance between them.
This calculator uses the Pythagorean theorem to compute distance between any pair of coordinates. Simply input their x and y values in the boxes on the left side of the screen; once this process completes, use this resultant value as the basis for finding your shortest route between these points.
Use of the distance formula is straightforward for even novice users, even when measuring points using Cartesian coordinates, rather than actual geometric spaces. Simply subtracting their x and y values before dividing that resultant value by 2/3rds to obtain your distance measurement result. Note that distance formula uses Cartesian coordinates rather than physical locations when performing this calculation.
Latitude and longitude lines form part of a grid map system similar to graph paper. These numbered lines run parallel with one another and intersect at specific locations – more precise than street addresses!
On the Play Store you’ll find free distance calculator apps that will plot your current location on a map and help you to determine how far away your destination lies. Some apps even give driving, walking and cycling directions and some allow users to share their current location with family and friends.
GPS units can also help you pinpoint your current position and display distance to destination, speed of travel and estimated traveling time estimates. They’ll even give you traffic and weather updates that could prove invaluable when travelling overseas.
Longitude 1
Latitude — the measure of how far north or south you are from the equator — remains constant across all locations, at roughly 69 miles (111 kilometers). While determining your latitude can be straightforward, longitude can be more complicated. A degree of longitude does not correspond directly with its counterpart in latitude – instead it measures how far east or west your location lies from Greenwich England, although historically other prime meridian locations have included Rome, Copenhagen Paris Canary Islands Jerusalem as well.
To calculate distance on a map, you’ll require both locations’ coordinates. An online GPS map tool like Google Maps makes this task easy: just use it to pinpoint and share your position with others as well as find nearby hotels, restaurants, schools and hospitals – not to mention that most Android devices come preinstalled with this app while iOS devices such as iPhone and iPad also support it!
There are multiple approaches to calculating distance between points, but most assume an object moving at constant speed. Unfortunately, this can create problems when applied in real-life applications where objects often accelerate and decelerate during their journeys. Luckily, distance calculator apps offer more accurate views of an object’s movements.
There are a few additional methods of calculating distance besides the standard formula, including Lambert’s formula which uses haversine function to calculate ellipsoidal distances between points on ellipsoidal surfaces; it offers accuracy within an acceptable 0.3% error range for most applications.
Straight-line distance formula is another reliable method for calculating distance. Using two line segments as measurements, this simple and straightforward method calculates linear distances between points on a map or computer calculator.
To use the straight-line distance calculator, enter two cities or countries’ names and codes then press on “Calculate Distance”. Your results will then be shown on a map with both red lines displaying Great Circle Distance and black ones showing Rhumb Line Distance.

When it comes to measuring distance, there are multiple methods available. Some are simple while others more complex; regardless of which approach is taken, however, accurate measurements must always be obtained – one way of doing this is with a distance calculator, which will calculate and display results on a map for easy reference. Utilizing one can save both time and energy when measuring the distance between two points.
First step to calculating distance between two locations is entering both addresses or cities and clicking “Calculate the Distance”. Distance calculation relies on geodesic formula which accounts for curvature of Earth to produce approximate as-the-crow-flies distance; however, calculations for shorter distances remain very accurate.
One popular method is using a distance calculator with GPS technology. While this approach may be quick and straightforward, it may not provide accurate results in every circumstance – especially if two locations are nearby each other.
For a more precise calculation, Lambert’s formula offers more accuracy than Haversine formula based on an ellipsoid’s equatorial radius – however this method can be difficult to implement within mobile apps.
Your iPhone, iPad or Android phone comes equipped with Google Maps app which will allow you to measure distance. It provides results in miles (mi) or kilometers (km). In addition, you can select travel modes like TRANSIT, BICYCLING or WALKING for more accurate results.
Distance calculator apps on iPhone, iPad and Android devices make finding out exactly how far one place is from another easy. Choose from hundreds of free and paid distance calculating apps available in both App Store and Google Play for the answer to this common query.
